Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about Austrian motorway vignettes.
- No. The vignette is required only for motorways (Autobahnen) and expressways (Schnellstraßen) operated by ASFINAG. Regular national roads (Bundesstraßen) and regional roads do not require a vignette.
- Yes. Vending machines and kiosks are available at most major border crossings. However, availability may be limited at smaller crossings, so purchasing in advance is recommended.
- You risk an on-the-spot fine of €120. If the matter is referred to a formal administrative procedure, fines can reach €3,000. ASFINAG uses automated camera systems to detect violations.
- If you purchase for the current day, it is valid from the moment of purchase. If you select a future start date, it becomes valid at 00:00 on that date.
- No. Transferring a vignette from one vehicle to another invalidates it. Each vehicle requires its own vignette.
- You must correct the error before the vignette's validity period begins. Contact ASFINAG customer service immediately. After the validity period starts, corrections are not possible.
- Electric vehicles registered in Austria are exempt from the annual vignette fee. However, they are still subject to Sondermaut (special tolls) on specific sections.
- Yes, but at a lower price than cars. Motorcycles require a separate vignette. The affixing rules differ: the sticker should be placed on the fork, frame, or another visible, non-removable surface.
- The Rettungsgasse is an emergency corridor that drivers must form when traffic stops on a motorway. Vehicles in the left lane move left; all others move right. Failure to comply results in a fine of up to €2,180.
- Digital vignettes can be cancelled and refunded before the validity period begins. Physical stickers cannot be refunded once removed from the backing paper. Partial refunds are not available.
- From November 1 to April 15, winter tyres or snow chains are required when road conditions are wintry (snow, ice, slush). This applies to all vehicles regardless of country of registration.
- You can check your vignette status on the official ASFINAG website by entering your licence plate number. The ASFINAG App also provides this function.
