Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about Austrian motorway vignettes.

Do I need a vignette for all roads in Austria?
No. The vignette is required only for motorways (Autobahnen) and expressways (Schnellstraßen) operated by ASFINAG. Regular national roads (Bundesstraßen) and regional roads do not require a vignette.
Can I buy the vignette at the Austrian border?
Yes. Vending machines and kiosks are available at most major border crossings. However, availability may be limited at smaller crossings, so purchasing in advance is recommended.
What happens if I enter the motorway without a vignette?
You risk an on-the-spot fine of €120. If the matter is referred to a formal administrative procedure, fines can reach €3,000. ASFINAG uses automated camera systems to detect violations.
Is the digital vignette valid immediately after purchase?
If you purchase for the current day, it is valid from the moment of purchase. If you select a future start date, it becomes valid at 00:00 on that date.
Can I transfer a physical vignette to another vehicle?
No. Transferring a vignette from one vehicle to another invalidates it. Each vehicle requires its own vignette.
What if I made a typo in my licence plate for the digital vignette?
You must correct the error before the vignette's validity period begins. Contact ASFINAG customer service immediately. After the validity period starts, corrections are not possible.
Are electric vehicles exempt from the vignette?
Electric vehicles registered in Austria are exempt from the annual vignette fee. However, they are still subject to Sondermaut (special tolls) on specific sections.
Do motorcycles need a vignette?
Yes, but at a lower price than cars. Motorcycles require a separate vignette. The affixing rules differ: the sticker should be placed on the fork, frame, or another visible, non-removable surface.
What is the Rettungsgasse and do I need to form one?
The Rettungsgasse is an emergency corridor that drivers must form when traffic stops on a motorway. Vehicles in the left lane move left; all others move right. Failure to comply results in a fine of up to €2,180.
Can I get a refund on an unused vignette?
Digital vignettes can be cancelled and refunded before the validity period begins. Physical stickers cannot be refunded once removed from the backing paper. Partial refunds are not available.
What are the winter tyre requirements in Austria?
From November 1 to April 15, winter tyres or snow chains are required when road conditions are wintry (snow, ice, slush). This applies to all vehicles regardless of country of registration.
Where can I check if my digital vignette is active?
You can check your vignette status on the official ASFINAG website by entering your licence plate number. The ASFINAG App also provides this function.
